|Shock| is the condition that can occur as a result of a serious injury or illness. It is characterized by pale, clammy skin, weakness, fast breathing, a rapid, weak pulse, and confusion. Also, low ~blood~ pressure (so low it cannot be read) and unconsciousness can occur. The treatment for a patient suffering from |shock| is to keep the patient warm with a blanket or other covering, stop any external |bleeding| by applying pressure, and keeping the patient lying down with the legs elevated (if possible...do not elevate a broken/fractured limb. Also, if you suspect a head or neck injury, do not elevate the legs). Yell for help. Do NOT leave the victim. Check for breathing; if none, begin |mouth|-to-mouth breathing immediately. If there is no pulse, begin CPR if you are trained to do so. Do not stop CPR until emergency medical assistance arrives. If the victim is unconscious but breathing and you cannot get immediate help, take the patient to the nearest emergency facility.
